1. Read Matthew 5:3, 2 Corinthians 8:9, Proverbs 16: 18-19 and Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 2546. What does it mean to be "poor in spirit"? How does this attitude contrast with pride? How does Jesus model this? How can we imitate that in practical ways?
Be humble, accept God's Will for you. Jesus prays "not mine but your will be done", Be open to the Holy Spirit and the calling of God
2. Read CCC 2547. Can the proud truly abandon themselves to "the providence of the Father"? Why or why not?
Likely not because they cannot "Trust in God as a preparation for the blessedness of the poor. They shall see God."
3. Read CCC 2631. How can pride stand in the way of forgiveness, prayer and right worship?
Asking forgiveness is the prerequisite for both the Eucharistic liturgy and personal prayer.
4. Read Philippians 2:1-11. What qualities does Paul encourage us to have? How does he base this command on Jesus Christ? What did Jesus do, according to Paul?
Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,
Jesus said love one another as you love yourself
he (Jesus) humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross
5. Read Luke 1:46-55. How does Mary model humility? What are some of the things Mary says that our culture does not tend to identify as "humble" statements? How does this illuminate the differences between the biblical understanding of humility and our cultural notions of it?
She says For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name
The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty
